Use our guide below to identify your AirPods model and find cases that fit perfectly. Some generations have slightly different dimensions, so choosing the right fit ensures your case protects properly and looks great.
Not Sure Which AirPods You Have?
Here’s how to identify your specific AirPods model:
Check Your Charging Case: The easiest way to identify your AirPods is by looking at the charging case. AirPods Pro models have a wider, shorter case, while standard AirPods have a taller, narrower case. The location of the LED light and pairing button also varies by generation.
Look for Model Numbers: You can find the model number printed in small text inside the charging case lid or on the underside of each earbud. Common model numbers include A1523, A1722 (Gen 1), A2032, A2031 (Gen 2), A2565, A2564 (Gen 3), and A3047, A3048 (AirPods 4).
Check When You Purchased Them:
- AirPods 1: Released December 2016
- AirPods 2: Released March 2019
- AirPods 3: Released October 2021
- AirPods 4: Released September 2024
- AirPods Pro 1: Released October 2019
- AirPods Pro 2: Released September 2022
- AirPods Pro 3: Released 2025
Key Visual Differences: Standard AirPods have long stems, while AirPods Pro have shorter stems with silicone ear tips. AirPods 3 and 4 have a contoured design that sits differently in the ear compared to the straight stem of Gen 1 and 2.

AirPods Case Size Guide by Model
AirPods 1 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods 1 charging cases measure approximately 44.3mm × 21.3mm × 53.5mm. The original AirPods feature a tall, narrow charging case with the LED indicator inside the case lid.
What Fits: Cases designed specifically for AirPods 1 will fit perfectly. Due to extremely similar dimensions, AirPods 2 cases also work!
Not Compatible With: AirPods 3, AirPods 4, or any AirPods Pro models. These have completely different case shapes and sizes.
AirPods 2 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods 2 cases are nearly identical to Gen 1, measuring approximately 44.3mm × 21.3mm × 53.5mm. However, the wireless charging version has a slightly different exterior finish and LED indicator placement (moved to the front of the case).
What Fits: Cases designed for AirPods 2 fit both the standard charging case and wireless charging case versions. Many AirPods 1 cases also fit AirPods 2, but verify compatibility if the case is specifically designed for the LED placement; the location of the LED is the notable difference between AirPod 1 and Airpod 2 cases.
Not Compatible With: AirPods 3, AirPods 4, or any AirPods Pro models.
AirPods 3 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods 3 introduced a redesigned, wider charging case measuring approximately 46.4mm × 21.4mm × 54.4mm with MagSafe charging support. The case is noticeably different from Gen 1 and 2.
What Fits: Only cases specifically designed for AirPods 3. The wider body and different hinge design mean that older generation cases will not fit.
Not Compatible With: AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 4, or any AirPods Pro models. Each has distinct case dimensions.
AirPods 4 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods 4 cases maintain a similar profile to AirPods 3 but with refined dimensions and USB-C charging. Available in both standard and Active Noise Cancellation versions, both use the same size case.
What Fits: Cases specifically designed for AirPods 4. While similar to AirPods 3 in shape, the subtle dimension changes mean dedicated AirPods 4 cases ensure the best fit.
Not Compatible With: AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, or any AirPods Pro models.
AirPods Pro 1 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods Pro 1 cases are wider and shorter than standard AirPods, measuring approximately 45.2mm × 60.6mm × 21.7mm. The distinctive squarish shape accommodates the different earbud design.
What Fits: Cases designed for AirPods Pro 1. Most/All AirPods Pro 2 cases also fit Pro 1 since they share the same external dimensions, they just may have a hole for the lanyard loop that isn’t needed for a Airpod Pro 1.
Not Compatible With: Any standard AirPods models (1, 2, 3, or 4) due to the completely different case shape. AirPods Pro 3 cases may not fit due to design updates.
AirPods Pro 2 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods Pro 2 cases maintain the same external dimensions as Pro 1 (approximately 45.2mm × 60.6mm × 21.7mm) but add a lanyard loop on the side and include speaker holes for Find My alerts.
What Fits: Cases specifically designed for AirPods Pro 2 will account for the lanyard loop and speaker openings. AirPods Pro 1 cases will fit but could not have a hole for the lanyard strap.
Not Compatible With: Any standard AirPods models (1, 2, 3, or 4) or Airpod Pro 3.
AirPods Pro 3 Cases
Case Dimensions: AirPods Pro 3 features the latest Pro case design with USB-C charging and updated dimensions to accommodate the newest generation of Pro earbuds.
What Fits: Only cases specifically designed for AirPods Pro 3. While similar to previous Pro generations, subtle design changes means there is no overlap with fit from other models.
Not Compatible With: Any standard AirPods models (1, 2, 3, or 4) or older AirPods Pro generations.
Frequently Asked Questions About AirPods Case Compatibility
Do AirPods 1 and 2 use the same case? AirPods 1 and 2 have nearly identical charging case dimensions, so many cases fit both generations. However, the AirPods 2 wireless charging case has the LED on the front rather than inside, so some cases are optimized for one generation or the other.
Are AirPods Pro 1 and Pro 2 the same size? Yes, AirPods Pro 1 and Pro 2 have the same external case dimensions. However, Pro 2 added a lanyard loop and speaker holes, so cases designed for Pro 2 may have cutouts that Pro 1 cases lack.
Will AirPods 3 cases fit AirPods 4? While AirPods 3 and 4 have similar shapes, there are subtle dimensional differences. Thus cases cannot be shared between them.
Can I use an AirPods Pro case on regular AirPods? No. AirPods Pro cases have a completely different shape (wider and shorter) compared to standard AirPods (taller and narrower). They are not interchangeable for any model/generation.
How do I know what generation my AirPods are? Check the model number inside your charging case lid or on the Settings menu of your connected iPhone under Bluetooth device info. You can also reference the purchase date and compare physical features like case shape and LED location.
Do all AirPods 4 versions use the same case? Yes. Both the standard AirPods 4 and the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation use the same size charging case, so any AirPods 4 case will fit both versions.
